In order to increase the insured's awareness and understanding of medical costs, Sony Health Insurance sends each insured individual a "Notice of Medical Costs" as well as a "Certificate of Health Insurance Medical Care Benefit Payment," which can be used to deduct medical costs from income taxes, and a "Notice of Payment Decision," which describes automatic payments of additional benefits and other amounts.

Notice of Medical Costs

The Notice of Medical Costs indicates medical costs and institutions for services used by the insured and dependents over one year (from the beginning of April of the previous year through March of the current year). It is mailed to the residence of the insured in July. Use this document to discuss medical costs among family members and to increase their awareness and understanding of these costs.

Certificate of Health Insurance Medical Care Benefit Payment

This certificate can be used to declare "medical expenses deductions" to the tax office if a "certificate of additional benefits issued by your health insurance society" is required. The certificate covers medical costs and benefits paid over the period of January to October of the current year.

Medical expenses deduction
Most salaried employees do not file their own income tax returns (filing period: February 16 to March 15). However, the medical expenses deduction may be used to obtain a refund for overpayment of income taxes.
You may apply for this deduction if your entire family incurred 100,000 yen (or 5% of total income) or more on medical expenses over the course of the year (January to December). Contact your nearest tax office for more information.
Declaring this deduction requires certification of medical expenses. Be sure to keep "receipts" and other documents received from hospitals.

Questions & Answers
Why are medical expenses for November and December not covered in the "Notice of Medical Costs"? And why is the "Notice of Payment Decision" sent 4 months after treatment?

Both are explained by the same reason: In principle, hospitals total medical expenses at the end of each month and prepare detailed reports on and invoices for medical costs (detailed statements), indicating "the content of examinations and treatments and the costs for each patient over the month" in question. Sony Health Insurance calculates benefits as soon as it receives these statements. However, since these statements from the hospital arrive at Sony Health Insurance 2 to 3 months after the medical services covered, the "Notice of Medical Costs" issued in late January cannot include medical services received in November or December. This also explains why the "Notice of Payment Decision" is sent 4 months after treatment.

Notice of Payment Decision

"Notice of Payment Decision" will be sent to individuals receiving the following benefits:

1. Copayment reimbursements
2. Dependent medical costs additional sum
3. High-cost medical care benefits (for the insured, dependents, or both)
4. Total high-cost medical care additional sum
5. Home-visit nursing care additional benefits (for the insured individual and the dependents)

In principle, this will be sent to the insured within 3 months following the month in which the examination was received (see Questions and Answers). In general, the amount indicated will be paid together with your salary for the month in which the notice was sent. Since payment methods vary from company to company, please check with the individual in charge of health insurance matters at your workplace for more information.

Cash payments for which the health insurance card is not used, other than those under 1 to 5 above (such as childbirth and childcare lump-sum grant and injury and sickness allowance) are indicated in a "Notice of Payment Decision of Insurance Benefits" sent separately. Please confirm detailed information by referring to the notice.
